A 68-year-old man was severely burned at a scrap metal yard in Newport, New Hampshire, on Tuesday by a gasoline fire. The fire ignited as the man’s son drilled a hole to drain a gas tank on an old vehicle. Clifton Labounty Jr. attempted to push a container of gas away from the fire to save his son, but the fuel exploded and burned him over most of his body, according to a report from WMUR.
Newport Firefighters arrived at Chubbs Scrap Metal on Page Hill Road after receiving a report of fire at approximately 4:00 p.m. Reports indicate that Labounty approached firefighters hunched over asking for help. Labounty airlifted to Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, for treatment of second- and third-degree burns over 80 to 90 percent of his body. His son burned his hands while helping his father, according to reports. The incident is currently under investigation.
