THE AUSTIN (TX) FIRE DEPARTMENT received the 1999 Austin Partners in Education Special Award for its Fire and Life Safety Day program. In the past year, the program reached more than 50,000 students and 3,000 teachers at all 68 Austin elementary schools. The program includes a visit to fire apparatus for the youngest students, a mock exit drill from the Fire and Life Safety House for the middle grades, and Fire Safety Bingo for the oldest grades.
