Training: The Progressive RIT Concept

Billy Greenwood

The Firefighters Support Foundation’s (FSF) newest training program is now available. “Our Progressive RIT Concept program is all about making the best possible use of your fireground rapd interviention teams (RITs), in contrast to the traditional reactive RIT that simply stages and waits to be activated,” says FSF President David Kenik. The program consists of a 45-minute video presentation and an accompanying PowerPoint presentation.

The presenter is Assistant Chief William Greenwood of FETC Services. Chief Greenwood teaches this program all over the country and at major conferences. The program’s theme is that RIT should be used proactively on the fireground to provide real-time analysis to the incident commander and to perform safety tasks. The program shows how standby RIT can be used as addition safety officers on-scene, providing 360-degree real-time analysis of the fire and it’s likely development. It delves into the advantages of a four-firefighter RIT, and discusses other fireground tasks that standby teams can engage in such a ladder throwing.  It presents the best staging area for a RIT, how it can be used to augment collapse considerations, and more.

The program is free to all members of public safety and emergency management agencies. Simply watch in the player below or download a copy of the video and Powerpoint HERE.
