Factory Mutual and NIST sign cooperative research agreement

Factory Mutual Research Corporation (FMRC) and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) will collaboratively study how heat transfers from flames to solid surfaces.

The project, expected to take three years to complete, will include large- and small-scale tests and the development of detailed radiative heat transfer models that can be used to predict fire growth and heat release rates, according to the FMRC. The findings will be archived and made public in joint scientific journals. The project will be headed by John de Ris, FMRC`s principal materials research scientist, and Dr. Howard Baum, NIST Fellow–Fire Safety Engineering Division.
