The infrared sensors of the black fire beetles could revolutionize early-warning systems for forest fires, reports ScienceDaily (http://bit.ly/LoQ8bS). Scientists have determined that their sensors might even be more sensitive than uncooled infrared sensors designed by humans.
The beetles seem to use these sensors to detect forest fires, even from great distances, since their wood-eating larvae can only develop in freshly burned trees.
The scientists stated that additional efforts to implement this natural prototype technology would be required.
