Standpipe Hose
A lined standpipe hose, designed to replace unlined linen hose on pin racks and reels, has been introduced by National Fire Hose Corporation. Called the “Rack ’n Reel 500,” the 100 percent synthetic hose is a 500-psi test, single-jacket construction. It takes no more rack space than linen hose.
At 12 pounds per 100 feet (coupled), it weighs the same or less than linen hose. An important advantage is that the hose can be hydrostatically tested and racked wet or dry. The all-synthetic construction is immune to mildew and rot and resists chemicals, ozone, and many acids, as well as abrasion and heat. It is listed for rack storage by Underwriters’ Laboratories, Inc., and Factory Mutual.

Suspension System
McDonnell Douglas Corporation has developed a Suspended Maneuvering System (SMS), rescue and fire fighting unit designed to fly under its own propulsion suspended from a helicopter on a 100-foot cable.
Under development for three years, the SMS has a seven by eight-foot platform, weighing 2800 pounds, which is carried to the scene of need by a helicopter. Using its own ducted-fan propulsion system for independent maneuvering, the unit can approach and dock against any building or terrain with obstacles that could make normal helicopter access too risky
The SMS is powered by a six cylinder 210-horsepower light aircraft engine driving a 36-inch fan. Four swiveling nozzles direct 400 pounds of thrust which allow t he forward, back, sideway, circular and figure-eight movements of the unit.
Radio and intercom systems and a television camera are provided for communication between the operator and the helicopter and ground forces.
The platform can carry up to eight firemen with their equipment, or up to 16 people on a rescue mission.
