Washington, D.C. – According to the IAFF, the National Interagency Fire Center is recalling 68,000 new emergency fire shelters. The shelters were found to be unusable after a design error that could cause them to tear while being deployed.
Wildland fire fighters use these shelters as a last resort if they get trapped by oncoming flames. The tent-like shelters can be folded to about the size of a book and quickly shaken open in an emergency.
The recall applies only to the newest design by the Forest Service’s Missoula Technology and Development Center. In the meantime, firefighters are supposed to carry the earlier design.
