Pennsylvania Man Survives Chainsaw-in-Neck Accident

A Pennsylvania man survived an on-the-job accident Monday in which a chain saw became lodged in his neck.

CNN reports (http://cnn.it/1ksY0ce) that James Valentine, 21, was on his job with Adler Tree Service in Gibsonia and was performing maintenance work on a pine tree when the chainsaw “kicked back” and cut into Valentine’s neck.

Valentine’s co-workers were able to detach the blade from its motor, but they left the blade and chain where it was–in Valentine, about a quarter of an inch from the carotid artery that supplies blood to the head. They held the blade in place until emergency responders arrived.

Valentine sustained most of his injuries to muscles and soft tissue around the shoulder, rather than his neck. He is recovering in stable condition at a Pennsylvania hospital.
