Positions for Forcible Entry with the Rotary Saw

By Roger A. Steger Jr.

Using rotary saws for forcible entry (i.e., metal cutting) uses a markedly different skill set when compared to using the saws for vertical ventilation. Firefighters have to be versatile when using them for forcible entry.  Firefighters must become comfortable with varying positions in operations. This can be practiced during equipment checks and training so firefighters will be comfortable overcoming the situations presented to them on emergency incidents. In this drill, some tips and techniques that we have found work well.

One of the biggest components is to become intimately familiar with the rotary saw(s) that your department carries. Always maintain safety as a high concern when operating with and around rotary saws.
