Firefighter Training Drill: My Fire Department 101: Engine Company Maintenance

By Forest Reeder

Each fire department across the county shares the same operational objectives, but the steps that firefighters take and the tools that they use to achieve them can differ greatly. Part 3 of the engine company series will focus on the maintenance of the engine itself and the tools and equipment that it carries.  Discussion and hands-on application for this drill will cover routine (daily/weekly/monthly) maintenance as well as considerations to be taken after the engine has been used for training or emergency operations.

Reinforce the “operational readiness” concept for this and all equipment you are assigned to use during your assignment. Make sure you review all documentation necessary for equipment maintenance and report deficiencies through the proper channel. Review department SOG/SOP and best practices for completing apparatus and equipment and readiness checks.
