Gizmodo recently took a look at the San Francisco (CA) Fire Department’s handmade wooden ladders, some of which have been in use for more than a century.
Gizmodo’s Jordan Kushins visited the fire department’s in-house ladder studio and main repair facility in the city’s Bayview neighborhood, where fire apparatus cycle through for repairs.
Mike Braun, who worked at the site for two decades, fielded questions about the ladders’ flammability. He discussed the resiliency of wood as compared to aluminum ladders, and the high grade of lumber used in the ladder fabrication process. Braun also discussed acclimating the wood to the city’s climate, as well as the craftmanship involved in making the ladders.
