Miami Beach, “America’s International Playground,” will provide the setting for the 107th conference of the International Association of Fire Chiefs that will run from September 28 to October 1. Headquarters hotel is the Fontainebleau Hilton and the conference program will be given at the Miami Beach Convention Center, the largest in the southern part of the United States with more than 500,000 square feet of exhibit and meeting area.
Swimming, boating and fishing are of course the prime attractions and all are available in either the front or rear of most hotels. Swimming means swimming in the Atlantic surf with 10 miles of a 300-foot uncrowded beachfront. Boating and fishing are available (in front of the hotels) on Biscayne Bay. Visitors can take a leisurely sail or go after a fighting sailfish. Golf courses abound, both on Miami Beach and across the bay on the mainland, with transportation provided from the hotel.
For the non-athletes there is a trip to Everglades National Park that costs $2 per car per day and guided tours that take in the Tamiami Trail. Trips are also available to the Gulf Stream and Hialeah Park Racetracks, both worth a visit even if the horses are not running.
For the ladies, there are, “on the Beach,” the Bass Museum and the Miami Beach Art Center, plus the Miami Beach Theater of the Performing Arts, among other cultural attractions. The Lincoln Road Mall is another magnet for the ladies. This shopping arcade is an open, tropically landscaped promenade, that contains eight blocks of stores and specialty shops with electric trams to carry the shoppers.
Quite naturally, Miami Beach abounds in restaurants—too numerous to mention—that range from fast foods to haute cuisine. A short trip across the bay to “Little Havana,” in addition to providing good restaurants will provide excellent entertainment in the Latin style.
Getting around Miami Beach is no problem. The city has an excellent system of public buses, taxicabs and rental cars. Sightseeing companies offer interesting and varied tours by boat and bus. There are also walking tours of significant art deco buildings.
Weather in Miami Beach is subtropical and the summer average is 81°F, only slightly cooler in September. Clothing runs to casual sportswear, swim suits, beach and resort wear, slacks and shorts. Sunglasses are suggested as are men’s jackets for evening or special daytime occasions. After sundown, wear casual street clothing, cocktail dresses or formats, depending on the occasion.
The formal conference program starts on Sunday, September 28, in the East Ballroom of the Hotel Fontainebleau at 3:30 p.m with IAFC President R. S. Rockenbach and Host Chief H. H. Goltzene of the Miami Beach Fire Department presiding. Business sessions as indicated below start at 9 a.m. Monday, September 29. Registrations are open from 2 to 7 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday in the Fontainebleau Hotel and at the Convention Center starting Monday.
A feature of the program this year is a “Rap with the Manufacturers”—two concurrent panel discussions, one with representatives of apparatus manufacturers, and one with representatives of equipment manufacturers. Panels will review mutual concerns and problems.
No conference, of course, would be complete without the exhibit of apparatus and equipment. As of this writing, there will be about 200 exhibitors presenting the best fire fighting equipment in the world at the Miami Convention Center, starting at 8 a.m. Monday, September 29.
On the social side there will be the annual FEMSA Night in the East Ballroom of the Fontainebleau Hotel at 8 p.m., Monday, September 29. And on Tuesday, a reception will be hosted by the Miami Beach Fire Department at the Convention Center. On Wednesday the annual banquet will be held at the Fontainebleau.
