Dec. 21—ANSONIA — A house fire on North Cliff Street forced 12 occupants to evacuate Friday night as 60 to 70 firefighters battled the flames for about three hours, the city’s fire chief said.
Fire Chief Alex Horjatschun said firefighters were dispatched to a home in the 70 block of North Cliff Street shortly after 9:30 p.m. Friday and found a fire burning toward the back of the the third floor.
He said 10 adults and two children evacuated safely from the home, which was left uninhabitable after the blaze burned through the walls and firefighters cut through the roof for ventilation.
Horjatschun said the bulding’s first, second and third floors were damaged as a result of the fire — the third floor by the flames and the first and second floor by the water used to extinguish them. He said the fire was tough to battle due to the house’s age and construction, made of some tight spaces that were difficult to access and extra wood that turned into fuel Friday night.
The fire marshal is investigating the cause of the blaze, Horjatschun said.
He said the American Red Cross was on scene and helped house the residents.
Firefighters from Derby, Seymour, Shelton and Orange also responded to the fire, Horjatschun said, and Ansonia’s EMS service also was on scene.

Horjatschun said the occupants of the home may have made it out with clothes like sweaters and sneakers, but the Fire Department is hoping for a quick recovery from the damages of the fire.
“Our sentiments and condolences go out to the family that they lost whatever they lost, especially a few days before Christmas,” he said.
