12-Year-Old Girl Dead After KY House Fire in Which Two People Were Rescued From Roof

A 12-year-old girl has died after being injured in a house fire in Pulaski County this week.

Natalie Stacy suffered smoke inhalation during a fire at a home in Ferguson Tuesday, according to the Fayette County Coroner’s Office. She was pronounced dead at 7:47 p.m. Friday at the University of Kentucky Medical Center as a result of smoke inhalation, the coroner’s office said in a news release.

Crews from the Ferguson Volunteer Fire Department and Somerset Fire Department responded to a home on Newton Street in Ferguson, a small city adjacent to Somerset, Tuesday morning.

“When crews arrived on the scene, they found heavy smoke and flames coming from the house,” the Somerset Fire Department said in a Facebook post. “Crews were able to rescue two people from the roof with a ladder, while crews rescued another victim from an upstairs bedroom after a primary search.”

Bengie Howard, chief of the Somerset Fire Department, said there was a woman in her mid-20s, a 5-year-old and Natalie at the house when the fire started.

At one point they were trying to rescue pets but a 911 dispatcher urged them to get out, Howard said.

Howard said the woman and the younger child were able to get out onto the roof of the house and he and a police officer used a ladder to get them down.

Firefighters learned that there was still a girl in the house and went in to search for her while others fought the fire. There was thick smoke in the house at the time, Howard said.

Firefighters found Natalie behind a door in an upstairs room of the house, brought her out and started first aid. She was later flown to the UK hospital.

Tim Ferrell, chief of the Ferguson department, said it appeared the fire started in a downstairs bathroom where there were two space heaters.

It’s possible a space heater caused the fire, he said.

Howard said in addition to the Ferguson and Somerset fire departments, officers from the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Office, the Somerset Police Department and the Somerset-Pulaski County Rescue Squad responded to the fire.

“Everyone did everything they possibly could,” he said.
