The Red Cross is assisting nearly 40 families in Amherst following a four-alarm fire at South Point Apartments on East Hadley Road. The fire broke out in the rear of one of the buildings in the complex just before 5 p.m. Saturday night, reports wggb.com (http://bit.ly/1rd4BKQ)
Amherst fire chief Tim Nelson said the rear of building 97 suffered them most damage, and is expected to be a total loss. Most of the damage was actually from smoke and water.
Several other towns were called into assist putting out the flames. Nelson said that everyone got out safely, and without injuries. However, some were treated for heat stress, and one police officers was treated at Cooley Dickinson for smoke inhalation.
