Alabama Mayor Wants to Limit Where Firefighters Live

The mayor of Hartselle (AL) wants a policy change that would limit where firefighters could live, reports The Decatur Daily (http://bit.ly/KL6FFx).

The change would not impact existing employees, but new firefighters would have to reside within at least 10 miles of the city limits.

Fire officials said the mayor wants the firefighters in reasonable distance if there is an “all-out call” to fight a big structure fire.

Currently, four of Hartselle’s 19 paid firefighters live outside the 10-mile zone. The newspaper details that another eight do not have a Hartselle address.

Fire Chief Steve Shelton supports the proposal, but Councilman Mark Mizell has concerns that it will impact morale.
