Allen Park (MI) Fire Department Set to Lay Off Entire Fire Department

The Allen Park (MI) City Council voted to lay off the entire staff of the fire department, with different news sources citing either 25 or 27 firefighters. The layoffs would take effect in 30 days. The city’s police department is also facing major cuts.

Firefighters are still reeling from the news, with Chief Doug LaFond telling The Detroit Free Press that he had been blindslided by the move.

The city, like many others in Michigan and across the nation, is facing sever budget shortfalls due to declining tax revenue and decreasing property value.
