The Harrisburg (NC) Fire Department designed this SMEAL pumper similar to the previous pumper it purchased-for simplicity, safety, and familiarity, says Captain Steve Gill. The department made a few improvements with this new vehicle while maintaining uniformity with the other pumpers.
Features/Equipment:
- SPARTAN Gladiator chassis with 182-inch wheelbase and 10-inch raised roof cab with six seats;
- CUMMINS ISX 12 450-hp diesel engine with ALLISON 4000 EVS automatic transmission;
- WATEROUS CSU single-stage, 2,000-gpm pump with 2½-inch front bumper discharge reduced with 1¾-inch line, one-inch HANNAY booster reel in driver’s side dunnage compartment, and four rear preconnects (two 1¾ inch, one 2½-inch, and one three-inch with ELKHART RAM attack monitor), and AKRON Apollo deck gun;
- UPF 750-gallon water tank;
- ROM roll-up compartment doors and one double and single wheel well sleeve on each side storing five spare SCBA and one spare oxygen cylinders;
- SMEAL ladder rack;
- PHILLIPS AED; and
- light and power with an ONAN eight-kw hydraulic generator and five FRC (a division of ROM) floodlights (one brow, two on upper body, and two telescoping at rear of cab).

The Charleston (SC) Fire Department specified this PIERCE aerial ladder truck in tractor-drawn design. Battalion Chief Joseph Roberts says the old, historic city has many narrow streets that are challenging to aerial apparatus. The ladder truck’s design provides more compartment space (500 cubic feet) and enhanced maneuverability.

The City of Stamford (CT) Fire Rescue Department uses this METALCRAFT MARINE boat to protect its harbor, which is the fourth largest in the state. Assistant Chief Trevor Roach says the department uses land-based engine companies to staff the boat as needed. The harbor has a variety of industrial, commercial, residential, and recreational properties, which includes six port facilities.
