The head of an Arizona firefighters’ group says police and firefighters should volunteer to have their pensions cut in the interest of helping their struggling communities avoid financial disaster.
The New York Times reported on the case of Bryan Jeffries says that ballooning pension benefit payments conflict with the oath public safety workers swear to serve their citizens. Politicians have been so far wary about attacking these benefits.
The report says that among the 236 employers in Arizona’s $6.1 billion Public Safety Personnel Retirement System, which covers about 31,000 active and retired first responders, just 39 have fully funded pension plans while almost two dozen others are seriously underfunded, forcing local municipalities to pick up the tab.
