A major arson deterrent is to be able to gain a witness’ confidence as soon as possible after an incident. This, however, is not always possible due to constraints of manpower availability. Here, Boston, MA, has tried an innovative approach by appealing to the witness’ pocketbook. By the use of a reward, they are able to accomplish two objectives of any arson prevention program. The immediate goal is to gain arrest information. The second, long-term goal is to provide additional risk to the arsonist. Witnesses to such a crime will be more available because of the monetary incentive.
