AZ Firefighter Wins Award for Heroic Actions in Rescue

The United Fire Firefighter of the Year Award will be presented at the opening ceremonies of the Arizona State Fire School on Thursday, September 8th, in Mesa, Arizona. The 2011 Firefighter of the Year is Tyler A. Menke, Tucson (AZ) Fire Department.

On July 28, 2010, a LifeNet helicopter tragically crashed. Without hesitation or a hoseline, first responder Tyler Menke ran into the flames in a dramatic response to the screams of the victims. According to Tyler’s seasoned fire captain, “It was the most heroic things I have ever seen.”

Within minutes, Menke came out of the flames with the first victim, barely conscious, dragging him to where medics were waiting. Tyler Menke again entered the flames, this time with his partner manning a hose line, and removed two more victims.

Despite their heroic efforts, one victim died at the scene. The remaining two died later that day at the hospital but not before their families and loved ones had the opportunity to say good-bye.

For his actions in the line of duty, Tyler A. Menke will receive this year’s United Fire Firefighter of the Year Award.
