Baumer Encoders Immediately and Reliably Detect Device Failure

The HS35F family of incremental hollow shaft encoders from Baumer are now available with an integrated enhanced monitoring system (EMS) that signals potential failure of the encoder. Designed to provide positioning/speed control and endure extreme mechanical strain, HS35F EMS encoders allow manufacturers to improve the safety and reliability of heavy duty processing lines and minimize expensive downtime.

From the moment the encoder is activated, a rapid microprocessor continuously monitors the device throughout its speed range. If a potential failure is detected, an alarm provides the master controller with a message about the malfunction. As a visual signal of the encoder’s status, the HS35F EMS features a green LED activity light that indicates proper operation; a flashing red LED that indicates an error in increments, zero pulse or signal consistency; and a solid red LED that indicates output driver overload. If the LED is off, either the encoder is not supplying a signal or is improperly connected. This system helps ensure proper wiring and connection of the encoder during installation.

Baumer HS35F EMS encoders are ideal for motor and drive control in oil and gas processing, wind power, food and beverage processing, metalworking, printing, packaging, material handling, solar/PV module manufacturing, textile processing and wood/lumber processing applications, as well as in heavy equipment such as cranes, hoists, elevators, and service vehicles.

The hollow shaft encoders are available for shaft diameters from 0.5 to 1.0 inches and can be further customized with shaft insert adapters that provide electrical isolation against voltages up to 2.5 kV and prevent bearing corrosion/wear.  With its large diameter between ABEC5 bearings, the encoder’s ShaftLock system allows the shaft to reliably endure high mechanical loads even at speeds up to 5000 rpm and 60 arcsec or better accuracy.

The encoder’s heavy duty design includes extra durable castings and wall structures. Dual seals, lubricants and a durable powder coating on the bearing housing and cover effectively protect against corrosion and allow operation in nearly all environmental conditions.  In IP67 versions, high performance impermeability seals protect against high pressure wash down. Tether mounting allows for easy installation.
