PLAISTOW — The exterior of an apartment complex on Westville Road was blown out Sunday in an early morning explosion.

The Plaistow Fire Department responded to the 12-unit building just after 8 a.m. to evacuate residents and check for injuries, said fire Chief Chris Knutsen.

The explosion did not result in a fire and no injuries were reported, he said.

The cause of the explosion is unknown but seems to have originated in the flooring between the first and second floors, Knutsen said.

The building has since been secured and utilities shut off pending an investigation by the New Hampshire Fire Marshal and the Plaistow Fire Department.

Residents were transported to the Plaistow Fish & Game Club on May Ray Avenue, which has been turned into a temporary shelter, Knutsen said. Most of the residents of the complex have been displaced.

The town is working with the Animal Control Officer and American Red Cross to assist residents and their pets with temporary placements.
