Fire Department of New York (FDNY) units from across New York City battled a seven-alarm fire in a four-story, mixed-occupancy building in the Van Nest section of the Bronx on Tuesday, January 2.

The fire appears to have started on the lower floors of the building on Commonwealth Avenue but quickly spread to the upper floors.

Although all the residents were accounted for, at least 16 people suffered minor injuries while attempting escape.

The blaze broke out just after 5:30 a.m. and burned uncontrollably until almost 2:00 p.m.

FDNY companies had to be rotated frequently as temperatures dipped into the single digits along with a biting cold wind.
