Firefighters from four counties have now contained a fast-moving brush fire in a rural section of Montgomery County that has burned more than 70 acres, reports The Washington Post (http://wapo.st/1F0BqQV)
Montgomery County fire department spokesman Pete Piringer said that the fire department first got a call about smoke in the area of Damascus Road and Laytonsville Road in Laytonsville some time after 1:30 p.m. Firefighters found the fire about a half-mile off the road. Within half an hour of their arrival, it had grown to more than 25 acres, he said.
At 3:20 p.m., Piringer tweeted that the fire had burned 30 to 50 acres and was still not contained. At 4 p.m., he said that it was under control at last, with firefighters working on putting out the remaining hot spots.
Trucks from Carroll, Frederick and Howard counties came to help extinguish the fire, and a Maryland State Police helicopter was relaying information about the area on fire from the air, Piringer said. In total, more than 125 firefighters are involved in the response.
Piringer said he had not heard of any structures on fire or any people caught in the blaze, but he knew of several farms in the area that could be affected.
