Five firefighters were injured while fighting a commercial fire late Tuesday in Los Angeles’s Echo Park neighborhood.
The Los Angeles Times reports (http://lat.ms/UR8UdE) that TV news footage showed towering flames shooting from the roof of the building.
The injured firefighters were being assessed at the scene, and there were no immediate reports of civilian injuries.
The cause of the fire was not immediately clear. It was reported shortly before 10 p.m. Witnesses said that it began in vegetation outside the building but swiftly moved inside through the windows.
About 135 firefighters staged an aggressive attack, but had to shift to a defensive operations when the flames swept across the attic and moved into the structure’s second floor.
