Two Die in CA House Fire After Apparent Explosion

Two men were killed and another seriously injured in a fire at a home in Pasadena, California.

The Los Angeles Times reports (http://lat.ms/TY6Xv0) that the fire occurred in a two-story home where elderly residents rented rooms.

Flames and heavy smoke quickly engulfed the building following an apparent explosion that was reported about 2:15 a.m. Fire and thick smoke sent 16 residents scrambling for safety.

Firefighters battled the fire for 20 minutes. A search of the home led to the discovery of the two men dead inside.

Officials were still working late Thursday to determine whether the home was in compliance with city codes. Residents told reporters the fire and explosion appeared to come from the first-floor room of a man who had left shortly before the fire started and who allegedly had a very cluttered room.
