CAPTAIN TERRY SELF of the Mesa (AZ) Fire Department received the 1997 United Fire Firefighter of the Year Award. He rescued an 11-year-old autistic boy and his 17-year-old brother from a 12-story electrical tower on February 11. It was Self?s day off. On hearing of the emergency, he responded directly to the scene and volunteered to be lead climber and, accompanied by Technical Rescue Team co-member Jeff Mitchell, was raised 60 feet with an aerial device. He free-climbed the rest of the way. Self received $3,000 in prizes and $1,000 in cash. The department received a $500 credit toward orders with United Fire.
