Carmel, NY – The May 1 house fire that killed a Larchmont police captain and his family apparently started outside the house, near the electric and gas meters by the front porch, said Woody Ledwith, the home’s insurance inspector.
Ledwith, a retired New York City firefighter, is still uncertain of the cause, but a gas or electrical meter malfunction could have sparked flames that would have spread to the porch’s roof, to the flammable vinyl siding, through walls, and into the ceilings. Ledwith also said it’s possible that someone set the fire, possibly by a still-lit cigarette, though there is no evidence of that to make any firm conclusions.
New York State Electric and Gas has taken the electrical box for further inspection. He said he’s waiting to speak with the fire’s only survivor, Thomas Sullivan Jr., whom he calls a “star witness.”
