News reports indicate an on-duty Chicago firefighter was shot in the leg while responding to a car fire in the city.
The Chicago Sun-Times says the shooting occurred in Albany Park on the Northwest Side. Fire Commissioner Richard C. Ford II said crews had arrived at the scene in the 3300 block of West Wilson Avenue and put a hoseline on the fire shortly before hearing shots and taking cover.
The report said the unidentified firefighter was struck in the leg and transported in fair condition to an area medical facility.
No suspects have been taken into custody thus far.
It is not unheard of for firefighter to face the threat of violence while responding to emergency scenes, and sometimes this violence turns deadly. On Christmas Eve in 2012, West Webster (NY) firefighters responded to a reported vehicle fire that had spread to a structure. As firefighters arrived on the scene, they came under fire by the occupant of the home, and Firefighters Michael John Chiapperini and Tomasz Marian Kaczowka were mortally wounded in the shooting.
In another infamous incident, veteran Long Beach (CA) Fire Captain David Rosa was slain and another firefighter was injured in a shooting while responding to a June 2018 explosion at a retirement home.
