Two young children were killed in an apartment fire on Chicago’s far South Side early Tuesday, according to a WFLD FOX news report. See the video below.
The victims’ mother was able to escape from the fire, but the door locked as she exited, according to a Chicago Tribune news report (http://trib.in/yZRn71). A police sergeant and a tow truck driver tried to reach the children but the rescue attempt was unsuccessful.
The mother of the victims, who is apparently pregnant, suffered smoke inhalation and was in serious but stable condition. She and her unborn baby were expected to survive. The police sergeant also suffered smoke inhalation.
Firefighters reportedly looked for smoke detectors inside the apartment but didn’t find any.
Deaths on the fireground can be difficult on firefighters who respond to fatal incidents, but the loss of children can be especially traumatic. Download the free firefighter training program, “When a Child Dies on a Call.”
