Citizen Reporting Fire Turned Away by Florida Fire Department

A Plantation (FL) man who ran barefoot to the nearest fire station to report that his house was on fire was turned away by a responder, according to a news report.

The Sun Sentinel reported (http://bit.ly/1vO7zvK) that Neville Morrison, 67, ran about four houses ran to the station, which was located about four houses away, but was told to use a phone to report the fire by an emergency medical technician (EMT).

Morrison told reporters that, although he told the EMT he had no phone, the responder reiterated that he had to call 911.

Once a neighbor called 911, it took fire crews eight minutes to get to the scene. Much of the house was destroyed, and Morrison’s family of five was displaced.
