City of Orlando to Investigate Firefighters Allegations

Orlando, FL On Monday, August 7, Mayor Glenda Hood responded to allegations that the city of Orlando knew that firefighters were sick for years and never told them about it.

The mayor rejected the notion that the city-operated clinic that performs checkups on the firefighters did not inform employees of the potential medical problems for more than 20 years. She said that the city would test all city employees, including retired firefighters, for hepatitis C and that a more formal process for city employees to file medical complaints would be established.

In the meantime, the city is planning to use its civil attorneys to investigate the class-action lawsuit filed by 33 firefighters alleging that information about their medical conditions had been withheld by the city.
