A homeless encampment fire spread to nearby grass in a drainage area near Academy Boulevard and Pikes Peak Avenue briefly impacted traffic along southbound Academy Monday afternoon according to the Colorado Springs Fire Department.
A social media post from the department shows what looks like a small blaze on a snowy stream bank, which started sometime before 5:31 p.m. today.
The fire was declared out by 5:54 p.m. A follow-up post by the fire department stated that the fire was caused by a homeless camp that caught fire and spread to surrounding vegetation. No injuries were reported, and SB Academy is now back open all lanes.
The National Weather Service listed the city’s temperature at 21 degrees Monday afternoon, with an overnight low in the single digits.
The city’s fire department warned of an uptick in “warming fires” this time last year.
