The Arlington County (VA) Fire Department took delivery of bomb squad vehicles that were ordered last year from ROSENBAUER. The bomb units were purchased under a Federal Urban Area Security Initiative Grant to the Washington, DC, Metropolitan area. The six departments that received units were the Arlington County (VA) Fire Department, Prince George’s County (MD) Fire Department, Montgomery County (MD) Fire Department, Metro Transit Police (DC), Loudoun County (VA) Fire & Rescue, and the Virginia State Police. THE INSTITUTION OF FIRE ENGINEERS—USA BRANCH was awarded a $949,000 grant by the Department of Homeland Security Fire Prevention and Safety grant program to continue the work of the Vision 20/20 project, which has helped bring together the nation’s fire safety organizations for developing common strategies for reducing the loss of life and injury from fire since 2007. The project’s strategies include increasing advocacy for fire prevention, conducting a national safety education/social marketing campaign, and raising the importance of fire prevention within the fire service. COMMON VOICES, an Advocates’ Coalition of individuals affected by fire, has received two Bronze Telly Awards for a fire safety public service announcement campaign as well as for one of the individual videos within the campaign. The PSA campaign was among more than 11,000 entries from all 50 states and five continents. The Telly Awards honor outstanding local, regional, cable TV commercials and programs; the finest video and film productions; and web commercials, videos, and films. The COMMISSION ON PROFESSIONAL CREDENTIALING (CPC) will launch the Fire Marshal (FM) designation. There are minimum eligibility requirements in the form of academic achievements and practical experience and contributions to the fire prevention field through professional articles, public speaking, teaching and research, professional memberships, community and civic involvement, and technical competence. The program also offers an excellent road map for someone choosing to move up in fire prevention. The UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS FIRE SERVICE INSTITUTE (IFSI) will receive a $996,505 Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Fire Prevention & Safety Research and Development grant. The grant will fund research on the combined influence of design and size of self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) on firefighters’ metabolic stress and safety of movement. Firefighter slips, trips and falls, plus overexertion and strain injuries are leading causes of firefighter line of duty injuries. The study’s results will also be valuable for those involved with risk management. THE MOTOROLA SOLUTIONS FOUNDATION presented a $1 million grant to the Motorola Solutions Foundation Memorial Scholarship Fund and the Everyone Goes Home® Firefighter Life Safety Initiatives, both programs of the National Fallen Firefighter’s Foundation. The Motorola Solutions Foundation Memorial Scholarship Fund provides scholarships to children, stepchildren, adopted children, spouses, and life partners of firefighters who died in the line of duty. The scholarships are awarded annually for full- or part-time study at accredited colleges, universities or vocational institutions.
