>> The RHODE ISLAND FIRE CHIEFS ASSOCIATION (RIFCA) was presented the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation’s Seal of Excellence Award for successfully fighting a state bill exempting seat belt use for first responders. The RIFCA’s efforts against the bill convinced Governor Lincoln Chaffee to veto it, sending a clear message that the state’s fire chiefs believe those in public safety should be setting an example for the citizens. In addition, the chiefs told Chaffee that the bill would make driving an emergency vehicle much more dangerous for firefighters, emergency medical services workers, and police.
>> SEARS HOMETOWN AND OUTLET STORES, INC. and its subsidiaries partnered with the National Volunteer Fire Council to raise money for one local fire department for each of its stores’ communities as part of Sears Hometown and Outlet Stores, Inc.’s “Salute to Local Heroes” charity campaign. The campaign aims to provide firehouses across the nation with funds to improve resources for training, equipment, and financial support to local heroes. From November 23, 2013, through December 31, 2013, Sears Hometown, Sears Home Appliance Showrooms, Sears Appliance & Hardware Stores, and Sears Outlet customers and company employees donated to their local fire departments while making a purchase. www.shos.com.

>> The DETROIT (MI) FIRE DEPARTMENT (DFD) will receive a donation of $115,000 from the documentary “BURN” through The Leary Firefighters Foundation. The donation represents a portion of profits from the film and will be used to purchase much needed gear for the DFD. BURN, the award‐winning film from Directors/Producers Tom Putnam and Brenna Sanchez and Executive Producers Denis Leary and Jim Serpico, takes audiences to the front lines of Detroit and into the fires and lives of the men who fight them, exploring human struggles, hope, and personal courage in the face of overwhelming odds.
>> GLOBE, in partnership with the National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC) and DuPont, awarded three more fire departments sets of gear in its 2013 Globe Gear Giveaway Program. Green Valley (Huntington, West Virginia) Volunteer Fire Department and Golden City (Booneville, Arkansas) Fire & Rescue will each receive four sets of gear, while the Jefferson Township (Midland, Ohio) Fire Department will receive three sets of gear. Throughout 2013, Globe and DuPont provided up to 52 sets of gear to volunteer fire departments in need. The program is open to NVFC members in the U.S. and Canada who are all-volunteer departments serving a population of 25,000 or less and who demonstrate a dire need for new gear that they cannot fulfill themselves.
>> The WILLIAMSON COUNTY FIRE PROTECTION DISTRICT (WCFPD) of southern Illinois was awarded a grant of a mobile emergency dispatch system by the National Firefighters Endowment, a nonprofit dedicated to protecting the lives of firefighters, and NowForce, a developer of comprehensive mobile emergency response solutions. Covering 265 square miles, WCFPD is one of the largest fire districts in Illinois and responds to several hundred calls a year. The grant will provide WCFPD with NowForce’s emergency response mobile apps and a Web-based dispatching portal, which locates and dispatches the closest available firefighters to nearby incidents. www.nowforce.com. www.wcfpd.net.
