>> ACTION TRAINING SYSTEMS (ATS) and the NATIONAL VOLUNTEER FIRE COUNCIL (NVFC) have announced the 50 winners of the 2014 ATS/NVFC $250,000 Training Giveaway. The announcement came during International Fire/EMS Safety and Health Week, which this year focused on the importance of all personnel receiving adequate training with the theme of “Train Like You Fight.” The 50 winning departments each received a one-year subscription for 20 learners and one administrator to the Essentials of Fire Fighting series through the ATS Online Learning Management System. To be eligible, departments had to be all or mostly volunteer, serve a population of 25,000 or less, be legally organized within one of the 50 U.S. states, and demonstrate a true need for the training that they could not meet on their own. >> The UNIVERSITY OF NEW HAVEN (UNH) in Connecticut was recognized by the National Fire Academy (NFA) for its associate degree in fire science and bachelor’s degree in fire science with a concentration in fire administration. UNH is one of only 16 four-year schools in the United States to receive the recognition for its bachelor’s degree, which is presented to programs that comply with the NFA’s Fire and Emergency Services Higher Education model. Colleges recognized by the federal agency have programs that emphasize firefighting response, fire prevention, and fire administration and emergency medical services management degree programs. >> DUPONT was awarded an American Chemistry Council Responsible Care® Energy Efficiency Award and the Industrial Energy Technology Conference Energy Award for improving energy efficiency and reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the manufacture of DuPont™ Nomex® at the company’s Spruance plant in Richmond, Virginia. The improvements that DuPont made to its Nomex® manufacturing facility reduced the amount of steam the company needed to purchase, which allowed the steam provider to burn less coal and save more than 200 tons per year of carbon dioxide emissions and lowered the amount of waste water produced from this operation by approximately two million gallons per year. www.dupont.com.
>> The CONGRESSIONAL FIRE SERVICES INSTITUTE (CFSI) presented Howard County (MD) Department of Fire & Rescue Services (HCDFRS) with the Excellence in Fire Service-Based EMS Award for implementing several unique practices that enhance the delivery of emergency medical services (EMS). The CFSI Excellence in Fire Service-Based EMS Award is considered to be the most prestigious award presented to a fire or EMS department. The HCDFRS was honored for implementing several initiatives including life-saving advanced care for STEMI patients, increased cardiac arrest survival rates within the county by partnering with Howard County General Hospital, and improved neurological survival for patients experiencing out-of-hospital sudden cardiac arrest. www.cfsi.org.
>> The AMERICAN FIRE SPRINKLER ASSOCIATION announced the winners of its 2014 National Scholarship online program. The 10 Class of 2014 high school graduates were randomly selected from nearly 58,000 students who participated in an online contest designed to educate students about fire sprinklers in general, fire protection in college residences, and potential careers in the fire protection industry. >> The ALABAMA ASSOCIATION OF FIRE CHIEFS (AAFC) and COLUMBIA SOUTHERN UNIVERSITY (CSU) awarded a two-year scholarship to East Alabama Fire District (EAFD) Chief Troy Marberry. A CSU student since 2012, Marberry won the scholarship based on his entry in an essay contest sponsored by CSU and the AAFC, an organization that provides professional opportunities for fire chiefs. He plans to use the award to complete his online master’s degree in emergency services management with CSU and to extend his learning and leadership as fire chief to help the EAFD. www.ColumbiaSouthern.edu.
>> MULLIGAN SECURITY was accredited by the New York City Fire Department (FDNY) to provide the training curriculum for the Emergency Action Plan (EAP) Director Program as well as also being accredited as a certified Emergency Action Plan School. This accreditation is the latest in a series of fire safety qualifications Mulligan Security has applied for and received. Earlier this year, the firm was accredited by FDNY as an Approved School for Fire Safety Directors. In April 2013, the firm was approved to offer the Construction Site Fire Safety Manager Certification course.
