  • The FLORIDA FIRE CHIEFS ASSOCIATION presented St. Petersburg (FL) Fire & Rescue (SPFR) Firefighter Jeremy Deins with its Award of Excellence in EMS/Rescue for his heroic action in rescuing a victim after her vehicle was submerged in water on October 28, 2015. At approximately 0730 hours during a severe rain storm, SPFR crews responded for a vehicle stuck in a flooded canal. When crews arrived, they found an occupant trapped inside her SUV; with water still rising in the canal, crews tied off ropes to safely enter the fast-moving current. The driver climbed to the back of the vehicle, where she saw Deins, who had climbed on top of the vehicle and used a Halligan bar to break the rear window in the SUV. After breaking the glass to reach the driver, Deins and driver of the SUV reentered the water together, allowing crew members on land to pull them to safety.
