A couple killed early Wednesday in a house fire in Methuen is the latest in a tragic series of fire deaths since the beginning of the year, reports wcbv.com
Flames broke out at 22 Buttonwood Dr. at 3 a.m. A police officer on patrol alerted firefighters to the flames.
James McDermott, 82, and Thelma McDermott, 79, were killed in the fire. Officials said they tried to escape the flames.
“One was found just inside the bathroom window. The other (was found) inside the front entry door,” Methuen Fire Department Chief Steven Buote said.
The tragedy is becoming an all-too-familiar scenario this winter.
“It was only two weeks ago that we were in the town of Concord where, again, an elderly couple succumbed to fire,” State Fire Marshal Stephen Coan said.
Eleven people have died in fires in Massachusetts this year.
