Life Sentence in Death of Delaware City (DE) Firefighter

Convicted of fatally striking Delaware City (DC) Firefighter Michelle Smith with a car in 2008, Joseph M. Taye Jr. was sentenced to life in prison plus 26 years. Taye, a paraplegic, was operating the vehicle with a stick since he does not have use of his legs, struck Firefighter Smith while she was operating at a vehicle incident on U.S. 13 in Delaware on December 20, 2008. According to prosecutors, Taye then fled the scene, also striking motorcyclist Edward Reiss, whose injuries Firefighter Smith was tending to.
