Delaware firefighter killed in hit-and-run

Delaware City (DE) Fire Company Firefighter Michelle Smith, age 29, died from injuries sustained while assisting with patient care at the scene of a motorcycle accident on the side of a highway in New Castle, Delaware.

According to the United States Fire Administration (USFA) report, a New Castle County (NCC) police officer stopped to assist with traffic control at the scene of the initial accident as other units began to arrive. A vehicle struck the police vehicle, then struck Firefighter Smith, and fled the scene. Firefighter Smith received treatment at the scene and was transported to the hospital, but eventually succumbed after two days of intensive care.

The suspected driver of the vehicle has reportedly been apprehended and is expected to face manslaughter charges, among others.
