Des Moines Firefighter Injured after Dodging Car

A Des Moines (IA) firefighter was hospitalized after dodging a speeding car that failed to yield to his emergency crew, reports the Des Moines Register.

After responding to an emergency medical call on Des Moines’ south side, firefighter Robbie Hilzer was behind a firetruck watching for traffic so the truck could back out of a cul-de-sac. Hilzer noticed a car approaching that wasn’t slowing down or changing lanes and dove into the ditch to avoid being struck, said Des Moines Fire Department Capt. Steve Brown

Hilzer suffered an injury to his hip and was held overnight for medical treatment.

The incident was reported to police but neither Hizler nor the firefighter driving the truck obtain a description or a license plate number of the vehicle.
