Detroit (MI) Firefighters Injured in Partial Parapet Collapse

By Jason Frattini

On May 29, 2013, companies from the Detroit (MI) Fire Department‘s 1st Battalion responded to the area of Chene and E. Ferry on the report of a commercial building fire.

Arriving first, Squad 3 reported a working fire in an occupied Party Store and that the first engine would be stretching. Chief 1 assumed command and reported a fire in a 75 x 30, two-story commercial heavily involved and requested extra personnel to the scene.

During the operation, while firefighters were removing windows from the second floor on the A-D corner of the building, a section of the parapet wall collapsed, showering bricks on two firefighters operating in the area. Immediately, C1 ordered all companies out of the building and requested a second alarm.

Firefighters pulled one injured member from the rubble to safety and the other was able to descend an extension ladder on his own. Both injured members were transported to Detroit Receiving Hospital via Squad 3; no Detroit EMS units available at the time of the injuries, in unknown condition.

Companies worked through the night to extinguish this fire.
