Dozen Volunteer Firefighters Lose Homes in California Wildfire

The numbers from the Butte Fire are staggering: 545 homes burned. Now, the damage has extended to include nearly a dozen volunteer firefighters, reports USA Today.

“It was crushing. Even when firefighters lost their homes, the fire wasn’t over. They didn’t stop. Still, they’re out there trying to protect those who had not lost homes yet,” said Jeff Stone, Central Calaveras Fire and Rescue district chief.

“I can’t thank them enough for the sacrifice. They saved my mother’s home and lots of neighbors’ homes,” said Mountain Ranch resident Ariana Gilbeau.

“We made a difference. We lost a lot of homes. We saved a lot of homes as well,” Stone said.
