Dozens of Cattle Die in Central NY Barn Fire

Madison, N.Y. — Dozens of cattle died in a barn fire early Sunday morning in eastern Madison County, officials said.

The fire was reported at about 2:10 a.m. at the farm at 7752 Water St. in the town of Madison, according to Noah Nassimos, the chief of the Madison Fire Department.

Firefighters found a barn engulfed in flames when they first arrived, Nassimos said. It took about two hours to put out the fire.

Nassimos said the farm had several interconnected barns, the largest of which was both on fire and filled with many of the farm’s cattle. The barn was “completely destroyed” in the fire.

Nassimos estimated that several dozen cattle died in the fire, but was unsure of the exact number.

“It was a terrible sight,” he said.

No people were injured in the fire.

Firefighters returned briefly at about 6 p.m. to extinguish small pockets of fire rekindled by the wind, Nassimos said.

“We were able to save probably three-quarters of the … rest of the out-buildings that are connected,” he said, “as well as the hay storage area.”
