Drawn by Fire: If Not Us, Then Who?!

We train. We sweat. We fight. We work hard. We ache. We are sleep deprived. We sacrifice precious family time. We may even lose control of our own mental and physical health. Why? Because if not us, then who?

For the most part the fire and EMS services are respected by the public, but the honest truth is we go unnoticed by the majority of the people we swore to protect until they need us in times of crisis. No one walks around sporting a fire service T-shirt that says Captain Thomas Kenney like they do LeBron James (though, I’d argue they should!). We took the oath to protect those in need and to educate our public to keep them safe from harm. It was never, and never should be, about fire service fame, self-recognition, public adulation, or political attaboys. We took the oath because we were born to serve others—it’s in our blood and soul to do so. We do it all because, if not us, then who? We ARE the protectors. We ARE the servants.
