Drawn by Fire: The Honest Assessment Stock

Firefighter with his head in stocks

In the 18th century, harming a town crier was considered treason, but all too often it’s the person who gives an honest assessment or leadership critique that faces retribution—even if the critique was requested. Any time someone gives an honest opinion or delivers bad news, let them know that you hear them—especially when those opinions and information go against what you want to hear, and challenges your self-belief and goals. And then follow up that you understand what they are saying and potential next steps.

It is a challenge for a successful leader to recognize that sometimes what got you here is not what you need moving forward. Look in the mirror and honestly ask: “Are my actions moving this department forward or holding it back?”

STAY FIRED UP and never punish the messenger, they may just be right!
