E-learning is Hot and its Not Going Away!

FDIC 2015: Freddie Batista teaches on e-learning for the fire service.

Although Firefighter/Paramedic Freddie Batista (Fort Lauderdale (FL) Fire Rescue) has attended the conference for 12 years, he is presenting for the first time at FDIC International this year. “It’s an honor to speak at FDIC International. All of the instructors that present at FDIC are subject matter experts on their specific topics. This is where the best of the best come together and train the firefighting community!”

He discussed his pre-conference workshop, “E-Learning in the Fire Service: Course Development, Creation and Training,” (Monday, April 20, 8a.m.-12p.m., Rooms 132-133). “Within the fire community, we all know that eLearning is hot—fire department training has evolved. With shortages in staffing and the inability to send personnel to conferences or out-of-state training, departments need to look at another avenue to help them facilitate their training.”

The key to the e-Learning is the learning management system (LMS), Batista says, but which one works right for your department? “I want to educate the firefighting community on all of the latest LMSs, software, and information pertaining to the e-Learning.”

E-learning offers the potential of 24-hour access to training material and access to additional knowledge from experienced fire service instructors and subject matter experts, easily accessed from your living room or firehouse. “You can make your training both accessible and affordable though your very own online e-learning portal,” Batista added.

After taking this workshop, “Attendees will know what to look for in an LMS, the content they will need, and how to convert their own content into online training,” Batista concluded.
