El Paso (TX) Firefighter Injured in Fall at MVA Scene

At approximately 0300 hours on June 2, 2014, a 15-year veteran firefighter was injured while providing patient care at Loop 375 North at Montwood Drive.

The El Paso (TX) Fire Department responded to a motor vehicle accident (MVA) that involved three vehicles and four patients. While rendering care and gathering equipment, a lieutenant from Rescue 6 fell through an opening of the roadway of the overpass near the location of the MVA. The lieutenant’s fall was witnessed by firefighters and immediately resources were activated to assist the lieutenant, who had fallen approximately 20 feet to the ground below the opening.

EMS Aspects of Extrication

The lieutenant was conscious when firefighters made contact, but due to the fall the lieutenant suffered injuries to his face and body. The lieutenant was transported to University Medical Center and was admitted in the intensive care unit for fractures to his face and further evaluation. Currently the lieutenant is in stable condition and is able to recollect the event and subsequent transport.

The patients from the MVA accident were never abandoned during this event and received treatment and transport to area hospitals. One 33-year-old female with severe injuries to her legs, a 30-year-old male, and a 41-year-old male with trauma-related injuries were transported to Del Sol Medical Center. One other 36-year-old male was also transported to University Medical center with trauma-related injuries. We were unable to get the status of the patients at this time.
