Bayonne (NJ) – A late-afternoon fire in the basement of a 14-unit apartment building on Avenue C led to the evacuation of around 30 residents Thursday night.

Although fire officials told residents at about 6 p.m. that the fire had been extinguished, the building remained uninhabitable for the night as PSE&G employees tried to cut the power.

Officials kept residents out of the building because of a suspected live electrical current in the building; they were afraid residents could be electrocuted if they returned to their apartments.
